Gary Keller would be a great MP. I would vote for him if I lived in the riding. I'm glad that I got to see him in action prior to throwing his hat in the ring.
I prefer your written pieces. There are almost too many podcasts around. Just a little reader feedback. Thanks. And not meant to disparage your efforts.
I like the podcast format. It’s an exchange of ideas and mature musings. Heads up Northern Ontario- a good one coming your way!! Bon chance Mr. Keller.
Susan, I echo your opinion. The reason? Simply put, Mr. Wells' written work is just so, so superior.
Now, that doesn't mean that I find his panel(s) to be deficient but, as you say, there are a great number of podcasts around. Therefore, my vote is for a bit more writing but don't abandon the occasional regular podcasts, just not quite as regular.
I don't have the patience to give Carney a chance, he lied right out of the chute and we have listened to Trudeau and most other ministers gaslight and repeat PMO word salads for nearly 10 years.
I might have missed it, but nobody talked about whether Carney will continue the practice (introduced by Harper, I believe) of hamstringing his Cabinet by running things out of the PMO. His emphasis of the parliamentary system in Canada coompared to the American one seemed to indicate "not."
I look forward to the upcoming panel discussions as the election comes into being.
I agree Mark Carney flying off to Europe to meet with some European leaders provides good political optics, but is it really appropriate considering he has yet to be elected by the people.? True some 131,674 card carrying Liberals gave him the role of Prime Minister, but is that a mandate to represent the Canadian people abroad?
Great Panel and I enjoyed your conversation with Justin Ling yesterday as well. anyone who follows politics in this country is well served by discussions like these, regardless of political stripe.
One small bone to pick with Ms. Gifford however and her suggestion that removing the carbon tax is inconsequential. I beg to differ. When your vehicle starts costing $15 less to fill you notice it and if you're a farmer who needs to dry grain using natural gas, (which is not currently exempted) you'll notice it, to the tune of hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Much has been said about the downstream effects of the tax and whether you believe the cost of groceries will go down or not this is a consequential change of policy. You have Justin Trudeau's craven and cynical political strategy in the Maritimes and Pierre Pollievre's constant hammering on it to thank for making it political poison. Lets hope its stays that way.
I appreciate that your work humanizes politicians, Paul. It's easy to take foregranted that you could list some stellar people and MPs in each of the main parties. Best of luck, Gary - you seem solid and public minded. I respect partisans who can engage in that work while still sounding like a human. If you and your party are successful, I hope you bring that with you into work as a MP and member of the governing party.
Good luck Garry, and thanks Paul for hosting such an in-depth and knowledgeable panel. It is so refreshing to hear people from different positions on the political spectrum speak respectfully to each other concerning the topics of the day. By far the best political podcast going.
Paul Wells: I thought your panelists were insightful (every one of them), as were your questions.
WRT what Alison Gifford said about Pierre Poilievre (what has worked for him, what doesn't and the need for someone to "drill it into him" that he needs to be respectful in tone, instead of someone who tries to wow listeners with alliteration).
I strongly agree with Gary Keller's observation that we need a thorough review of what the federal government does.
Finally, Marci Surkes is dead right about the challenges that Mark Carney faces.
Yes, Transport is an important portfolio, but the Internal Trade file is critical right now and Freeland has excellent links with the premiers and the skills to pull off real progress on this overdue priority.
Karina Gould is Trudeau all over: young, progressive, more focused on social issues than any serious element of statecraft. Sunny ways. Why would Carney keep that element in cabinet and provide an easy target for Poilievre? Sunny ways are anathema to Canadians right now, so she's gone. Pretty simple, I think.
No interest in any serious element of statecraft? She campaigned on creating an intelligence agency dedicated to foreign intelligence collection, and on increasing military spending sooner rather than later.
Nothing in her track record leading up to her leadership campaign suggests she would follow through on either. She sniffed the current affairs wind and made a couple of promises without plan or substance. She's not credible on any aspect of security or defence.
I guess I found it more of a non-event that she wasn’t placed back in Cabinet. She was in Cabinet for the entire Trudeau government and there are fewer spots now which seems smart and in keeping with many other functioning democracies.
I was impressed by her strong advocacy for those who have befallen misfortune. Their treatment is how you, how I anyways, judge a society. I won’t be surprised if she again occupies an important role in government.
Good panel Paul. Good luck to Gary. Putting your name on the sign isn’t an easy thing. I’m a Conservative voter that is actually hoping the election is delayed. Let Carney stumble (which he will), and improve your chances in the general. Going now would be akin to a vibelection. We have more pressing issues to handle. Like protecting Canada and having a plan to grow our economy. Gould tried to have Hansard erased for the Nazi visit…hard pass.
Keller should have watched the Carney clip from the cabinet meeting yesterday instead of signing up potential voters for his candidacy for the CPC. He would have learned how easy it was for Carney to sign an executive order cancelling the consumer portion of the so-called carbon tax. The mechanism to do so was already included in the legislation that the idiot Poilievre hadn’t bothered to to read in the legislation he so cavalierly banded about bragging that parliament had to be recalled to cancel the “carbon tax”. And we’re still getting the rebate for the last quarter. Keller would make a decent CPC candidate if Poilievre weren’t the leader. Poilievre has poisoned the entire CPC caucus. Keller is a fool to go into that venomous snake pit of lies and character assassinations.
For many years the Liberals told us how great the carbon tax is. They gave hundreds of speeches, they harangued us, lectured us, beseeched us to see that planet earth would be saved if we would only reduce our paltry emissions. Didn't matter that the largest emitters, China, India, Russia, the U.S., don't have carbon pricing. We could grow the economy and save the planet. And with that rebate thingy, we would all get richer. Then they woke up one day and realized, "holy shit Canadians don't like this thing" and because of that stupid "axe the tax" slogan we are going to lose the next election. But instead of sticking to their guns, adhering to their alleged ideology and continuing on their saviour roles, they dropped the thing like a bad habit, and did it with Trump style flourish using an executive order. And you think Poilievre is the asshole. Glad we cleared that up.

Me too, Susan. I think I write better than I talk. But sometimes the news is a bit... short-cycle. This felt like one of those days.
I disagree. Only so much reading a body can and wants to do in a day. I really enjoy your podcast. And…I show my enthusiasm by paying for it.
I admire your spirit of experimentation, though!
Agree….krugman is in the same boat… in fact he is an incredibly good writer and fast as well
Paul, they are both great … but I read faster than I listen.
All the same continue to be a reader and a fan.
Warm Regards,

Again, Sir, your writing is just so, so superior.
And thank you for that.
I agree.

A terrific little panel — thanks Paul.
Garry K would be a terrific MP; please post his nomination result here when you have news.
Question: Will anyone care/does it matter that Carney’s team concocted a fake cabinet order for him to sign to “end” the carbon tax?
Paul Wells: I thought your panelists were insightful (every one of them), as were your questions.

I'm surprised there is no scuttlebutt about where Carney is going to run for a seat!

This is not fair. I happen to know people who briefed her when she was Minister for Democratic Institutions.
By many accounts, she was serious, respectful and receptive when listening to reports of specific threats, even when her boss at the time was not.
Do you believe that there is something in her record that hints at dishonesty?
Whatever you think of their comparative backgrounds, she certainly ran a more idea-based leadership campaign than Carney did.
She tried to erase the Nazi visit from Hansard. Hard pass.
I guess I found it more of a non-event that she wasn’t placed back in Cabinet. She was in Cabinet for the entire Trudeau government and there are fewer spots now which seems smart and in keeping with many other functioning democracies.

Waste of time talking about Gary Keller.
Why the concern about Gould left out of Cabinet.? She was a bit player and sent out oodles of emails that clogged my inbox.
Not an impressive podcast Paul . I stopped watching after 8 minutes

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Touch grass Kathleen.
The performative theatre of “removing the carbon tax” by Carney was just that. It’s all over the media.
