Hey, the video's on Youtube too! (Subscribing to the Youtube channel is free and will help me spread word of my work.)

I used to hang out on Roncesvalles Ave. in Toronto when I was at university in the early 1980’s and that’s where I found my favourite T-shirt at a Polish variety store. It was black with the Solidarnosc logo in red. My Polish professor (he was born in a refugee camp in England after the war) of 20th century literature was impressed.

Great poster.

Outstanding. It was certainly interesting to talk to my fellow students about Lech Valesa and the union movement in Poland. They had a hard time slotting it into the standard left-right framework. And I actually wrote an essay about Pope John Paul II’s (J2P2 we called him at the time) encyclical called The Dignity of Labour, which embraced several tensions with the Gdańsk union.

Anyway, the poster made me nostalgic. Congrats on the award. Does Appelbaum have one?

For some reason (probably down to YouTube technology), I never have a problem accessing YouTube, even when my internet signal is weak, which it often is. So I listen to podcasts on YouTube, too. I can also use my phone to access YouTube. Long story short, the more you put on YouTube, the more likely you'll increase the audience, in my opinion.

Thanks Paul. My iPad is too old to get the Substack app.

OMG😱 Paul please be a language police person & tell commentators to stop using “you know” in every sentence…remind them when they tell us “ you know” why bother since they told us listeners we already know

Mary O'Keefe's avatar

Perhaps substitute "like"? You know, like I went to the store yesterday...

How would we know they are Canadian if they don't use that speech, eh?

Hi Paul—The panel members are excellent and the format a great addition to your blog.

I find myself asking myself, “Could we be on the verge of seeing the BQ save Canada by helping shut Pierre Poilievre and his party out of Quebec?” The irony is sweet. The Liberals, my normal party of choice, seem determined to self-destruct by failing to change the narrative of sequentially mismanaged crises (SNC Lavalin, Wilson-Reybold, Philpot, gun control, etc) and continuing to tolerate a leader who has clearly out-stayed his welcome and provided an opportunity for the faux-populist and disagreeable PP to sweep into power. I anticipate the Liberals federally will be left about where the Ontario Liberal Party found itself in 2018 when the progressive Kathleen Wynne was trounced by the unimpressive and thuggish Doug Ford. We live in “interesting times”.

Good podcast, thanks for it!

I just finished Jane Philpotts excellent book. The entire SNC debacle stands out, not in her book, but just being reminded of it. A PM who had been elected and talked about government by cabinet and the power of equality, yet didn't hesitate to push out two strong female ministers.

My free advice (worth every penny) is for the NDP to pivot fairly hard left. It may be too late for this election. But 4 or 5 years of CPC, and the mood for a swing to progressive ideology will be there.

True re SNC, however trying to take down your leader publicly is usually a career-limiting move.

Love this! I’m sooooo tired of the TV panels now, At Issue, all that stuff. I don’t care about the opinions of a single journalist anymore (except Paul Wells I guess!) but I do love a panel of people who have actually ‘been there’ and are happy to speak without talking points. That’s what makes the Curse pod so fun to listen to, just honest partisans happy to talk and swear.

Paul Wells's avatar

I actually considered calling this crew "The Panel That Doesn't Swear," but Marci was afraid I'd hold her to that. Also, I don't want to imply any competition. I'm trying for a different tone from the TV panels and the Curse crew, and I consider this a very tentative test drive.

I am a loyal Curse listener, but I really enjoyed this one also - different tone and style that very much reflected you as an author and commentator. That's a good thing. Political panels are like ice cream - lots of different flavours to like. ;-)

Lizzie's avatar

Didn’t mean to imply competition, just a compliment on the vibe :)

Like this format very much. Declared partisans discussing politics respectfully as opposed to a panel of non-partisan journalists that don’t seem that way to the layperson. Look forward to the next instalment.

Any chance your videos can be posted on the Podcast feed please?

A decent effort for a first show.

I do look forward to future episodes.

I’m both looking forward to, and dreading your Ukraine coverage.

Great panel of people who speak their minds and not the spin.

I like the concept and appears a great start. I long for balanced and respectful dialog from a variety of perspectives. I have enjoyed Peter M. podcasts in this mode in the past but the same commentators can become tiring over time.

Just watched your inaugural YouTube and subscribed. I thought it was good. One thing I really like about the option of listening rather than reading is that I can get up and do other stuff while you and the panel natter on. I thought today was good...enjoyed all your guests and nice to see you in action as well, Paul.

I am very familiar with Gary Keller but not the two ladies. They all came across as competent and quite non-partisan. Enjoyed watching.
