I'm a Liberal supporter, and I agree with you, Walter. The most prominent instance I can think of where anyone "paused their campaign" in my lifetime is John McCain in 2008, who notoriously "paused his campaign" for a meeting with his opponent and the incumbent, and then had absolutely nothing to say in the meeting. Does Carney really want to remind people of that? Canadians understand that the guy is PM and has official duties. He could easily split his time between 1. campaigning, 2. governing, and 3. campaigning by being seen to govern, without any of these histrionics about "pausing".
I read a comment to a newspaper article recently that speculated that maybe Carney would test positive for COVID on Wednesday morning and then have to isolate for ten days to two weeks. I laughed initially, but part of me wouldn't be surprised if that actually happened.
If I may Paul W. I disagree with you about Mr. Poilievre's French. Yes he speaks French but lacks a nuance vocabulary and it sounds like he is still learning the language, he makes mistakes. As for PM Carney, he has really improved his French language skills. In the end it does not matter to me at all as a French speaking Montrealer of 14 generations. I don't think I am alone in that boat in Quebec. The real reason why Carney is the man of the hour is Trump. Poilievre would not be able to handle Trump, too many in his party are Trump supporters. As for the debates, too much is made of them, debates to me appears to be an American import. I won't be listening I really don't care, performance in a debate is not the way you will govern. Why is the media making such a todo about the Pauses? Carney is the PM he has to govern and has to campaign. We are in a time of grave crisis and Trump is still coming after us. He would be irresponsible if he did not take the time to govern. As for Poilievre he is smarmy and irritating, if the CPC wants to win an election is to get rid of this type of leader who is a cannon ball to drag around.
So the candidate you prefer can be forgiven for anything that careless observers might foolishly perceive as an imperfection, whereas the candidate you like less is beyond redemption. Got it.
We all have our opinions in this matter. I will be honest I never liked Poilievre he is irritating. Carney has background and gravitas, that is what matters now. BTW no one is perfect not even politicians.
If "no one is perfect, not even politicians", then perhaps you might see your way through to extending the same courtesy you did for Mr. Carney over to Mr. Poilievre.
As a former police officer who interviewed many people over the decades, I learned long ago that if you give someone enough time, their honesty will come out and sometimes that honesty gets in their way.
Thank you for being "honest" about never liking someone because you find them irritating. One thing you make clear in that statement: nothing Mr. Poilievre will ever say or do is going to change your mind about him.
Please do not confuse your honesty, though, with clarity. In fact, you may wish to engage in a little soul searching about your ability to put aside your perceptions and whether that impairs your ability to see through things clearly...
Obviously Laurent you haven't been following Carney's link to China? This is a much bigger concern than Trump!! I can't stand Trump but I am far more worried about Carney's link to China! It was priceless watching Robert Fife Ottawa Bureau Chief for the Globe and Mail call Carney out (on the CBC) for his connections to China and for suggesting The Globe and Mail hadn't checked their sources!! What??! He was trying to shut the reporter down! Go ahead and pull it up! I'm not sure how you can put your support behind Carney?! Also, what about the fact he won't disclose his net worth? According to CTV 65% of Canadians want to know this! (Estimated at $100 Million). Polievre is by far the better Candidate! Carney had to take 3 days off to hide because he was sick about questions about China!!
And other questions he doesn't want to answer!!! You think Carney is best to run our country??!! i wish people could differentiate between likeability and competence! Do your research! We don't even know this guy! Sure he has a great resume but so does Peter Navarjo Trumps right hand man who told Trump to do the tarriffs!! A great resume does NOT necessarily make a Leader!! Carney is a Gazillionaire Banker who wants to become PM because of all the billion dollar deals he can make for Brookfield!! As for Pierre's French, which seems like a trivial point compared to what I've already highlighted, he is going to run circles around Carney in both debates! Do your research on Carney Laurent! I think you're going to be disappointed!
So again if a candidate is wealthy this is wrong? Every PM was wealthy and did this make them bad people? He is an economist, that would be competence. He has links to China, Ok but then again TRADE is everything and Canada needs to trade not only with the USA but every other country in a major way. Trump is a very big threat which should not be underestimated. Being the PM during a campaign is a difficult task, he did not hide and I find that simplistic that Poilievre is now saying this, he is desperate at this point so back to the insults we go. Can Poilievre make deals with other countries or large corporations/ heads of state/enhance our profile in the world? Poilievre is hungry for power and that is a problem for us taxpayers. BTW I have done my research on Carney and Poilievre for many years now.
Sorry you haven't done enough homework on Carney. First of all I have no problem with a leader being rich but super rich is a problem. His conservative net worth is + $100 Million. Why does he want to be PM? Because it opens all sorts of avenues for him to make deals! Not necessarily in the best interest of Canada (e.g.the $25 Billion in Bermuda.) If Carney loses do you really think he's going to be happy being the Opposition Leader? Ha!! He'll be gone in a flash. Kind of like he had to take 3 days off because he was getting too much heat. But Polievre is "Power Hungry" sounds like you're describing the.wrong guy.
You don’t know what Carney’s worth is. There have only been guesstimates and estimates. It is all in a blind trust, as it should be. Carney also has about 20 years on Polievre. We know what PP has been up to, so where did he get his estimated $12 million? Carney is an Economist with a PhD. Not like Harper, who apparently had the degree but never worked as one. He’s really done well for himself too. For over 2 years, we have listened to Pierre declare himself the next PM. But I have never heard him address so many different things. He prefers things to just fade away. I’m also fed up with “Canada’s broken!"
If Canada is NOT BROKEN why are we second to last in economic performance amongst the 38 OECD countries? Why has our debt doubled to $1.25 Trillion dollars? Why has our federal budget went from $282 Billion to $537 Billion? Thats a 90% increase!!! IS IT NOT TRUE? In 2016 the Federal Govt had 257,000 employees it increased by 43% it's now 368,000 (that's excluding the military, RCMP and Crown corporations!) THATS RIGHT!! THEYRE ALL TRUE!!! THANKS TO THE LIBERALS!!! Carney will be more of the same..although he will be busy doing deals to line his pockets!! Oh and don't even try to compare Harper to Carney!!
Harper went into politics to help Canada. Not Carney! As Ive said many times...if he loses he will be gone!! He wont stick around to be the Opposition Leader!! That's below him!! The Blind Trust is a total joke! When you have that kind of money it can NEVER BE BLIND!! It's a total CONFLICT OF Interest!! He is super rich!! Look at the people he hung out with in NYC! They don't socialize with the wealthy. They socialize with the SUPER RICH! Why has the Globe and Mail been pushing him to reveal his net worth AND HE WONT?? You'd better do your homework about Trump loving Carny! At least Trudeau we knew. But you'd have to do research, are you ACTUALLY capable of that? Find out how Brookfield bailed out Jared Kushner billions of $$. Carney is a Con man and you're being duped...but that's okay he's an Economic scholar! Ha!! Ha!! Jokes on you! He tells one province what they want to hear and then tells another the opposite? Have you even read his book? I have and he had totally lied to our faces about what he plans to do!! But he's a PhD. That makes it okay???
Always enjoy these panels. One thing, I'd like to hear a little more from Allison. I know the NDP is in barely there mode right now, but I always appreciate her insights and comments on the campaign as a whole.
Allison didn’t get much time to talk - too bad, she is very insightful. Respecting Carney, he is not Prime Minister, this is a caretaker government, he is the Liberal party leader. But I appreciate it’s good politics to continue that impression. Jason’s comments that Poilievre needs to better position himself with seniors is also my impression. Most of my senior friends are attracted to Carney’s resume and seriousness. My concern with Mr Carney is partly to do with his ethics, but more so with his backup team that looks a lot like that of Mr Trudeau and I wasn’t much impressed with the competence of that team.
As I mentioned above Carney is ANYTHING BUT THE PRIME MINISTER! He has already had at least 3 scandals to deal with...$25 Billion Brookfield investments in Bermuda ($5.3 Billion in lost taxes to Canada!) His links to China that he denied and then all the photos emerged, and he had to back peddle yet AGAIN. There was also his defending a candidate in Markham who was threatening to hand his opponent over to be killed. THEN that candidate is replaced by ANOTHER CANDIDATE WHO IS WORSE!! Honestly, reading comments on this page I am horrified that you stand back and go tisk tisk tisk...Polievre's French is so poor and oh Mr. Carney is so much more qualified. You sound like snobs that are completely out of touch with reality! DO YOUR RESEARCH ON CARNEY!! He is NOT WHO or WHAT he claims to be!! He has been photographed with VERY POWERFUL MEN in China!! You do not get that kind of reception unless you are CONNECTED. Let me hear how you defend that? ALSO one more thing!! The Liberals are NOT experienced enough to handle the challenges ahead of us!! In December, when Liberal support was 20 points lower and the party was preparing to manage a historic defeat (but supposidly now they're better than sliced bread), the party populated its nominations with candidates with little or no political experience. A whole cadre, perhaps even hundreds of Liberal candidates who were kind of no-hopers. (I borrowed that quote). You're going to elect them???
I actually agree with some of this (particularly the parts about the Liberals having recruited some weaker candidates when we expected to lose), but not a single word of this little jeremiad has any bearing on whether Mark Carney is currently prime minister, which he is, by dint of the governor general having sworn him in as prime minister on March 14.
Increasingly, we all live in our own worlds. I live in one where the prime minister is the prime minister whether I like him or not. You apparently live in a different one. I wish you the best with that.
He was voted in by what 130,000 Liberals? I do not agree he is my Prime Minister. Also, its interesting he picked the shortest time for the election. He didnt want people to have a chance to dig into his past. If I were Christia Freeland I would be furious since they've discovered (by the feds) there was Chinese interference in the Liberal Leadership vote. So go ahead and think he's your Prime Minister but I won't until the people of Canada actually vote him in and I seriously hope that doesn't happen.
I did some more research. It appears you were correct, and I was not - Carney remains the Prime Minister until the election. Arguably he and the Liberals have reached beyond the legitimacy of what a caretaker government is supposed to do, and it is clear the Liberal strategy is to keep Mr. Carney under wraps. Still, until the election he remains the Prime Minister.
Thanks, Carey! I, in turn, had misunderstood your comment - I thought you were arguing that because Carney didn't lead his party into the last general election, he's not a "real" prime minister. (This is an argument we see a lot of.) If you were just arguing that the dissolution of the House means he's not currently prime minister, that's a different argument, and less toxic.
Who do you expect him to have in his cabinet before the election? Once Carney wins, then he will pick the ministers. The backup team is just that. The government is still working. Why is that an issue?
This is a common complaint and I'd love to hear more from Allison, but it also makes sense to me that when there are two parties competing to win and one party also present, there's just more to talk about with the former two.
The pausing is, sorry, a joke. The Liberals love the visuals and now, nine readout statements. This is campaigning, and blatantly so.
Either that or measles ... he could cover himself (liberally?!) in red dots for a great photo op!
Right. And in 2015, Trudeau was going to exceed expectations if he showed up with his pants on.
What you’re supposed to say is that the other guys’ candidate is a great debater. Raise expectations, don’t lower them.
If I may Paul W. I disagree with you about Mr. Poilievre's French. Yes he speaks French but lacks a nuance vocabulary and it sounds like he is still learning the language, he makes mistakes. Then good news! You don't have to try quite so hard to argue that everything your guy does is perfect.
LOL! Perfection is not of this world.
If "no one is perfect, not even politicians", then perhaps you might see your way through to extending the same courtesy you did for Mr. Carney over to Mr. Poilievre.

Ok. A bit of light humour. Check out how AI translates "Tout le Monde En Parle". It never get it close to right or even the same. Lol!
Poilievre said more than once that he only agreed to come to TLMEP because his wife wanted so badly to meet Kevin Parent…https://www.lapresse.ca/arts/chroniques/2025-04-14/tout-le-monde-en-parle/il-faut-qu-on-se-parle-de-kevin-parent.php?sharing=true
