Thanks for this, Paul. A great interview; I will check out Matt's book. I would like to hear more interviews with young writers who are finding their way in today's crazy journalism world. Also, I enjoyed this format - casual, concise, informative. I appreciate seeing an interview that isn't severely edited to make it look overly professional / scripted.
I'm your man for stuff that doesn't look professional. I kid! I think. Thanks for the note. I did this fast and pushed it out fast, so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Top Quality Independent Journamalism, but I'm glad you took it in the spirit it's intended. I hope more young writers will find ways to write long-form, so I was happy to shine a light on what Scace is up to.
Fire is a naturally recurring, and essential, natural process in this part of North America. We have suppressed it for 100+ years with the best of very misguided intentions, like avoiding paying off credit card bills for a century. Compounding interest has accumulated in dead and decadent forest understory, preventing forest regeneration and related ecosystem processes. In addition, we've built our homes and businesses in and among all this fuel load. This folly is now yielding predictable results, which will continue.
The credit card bills have come due, and Nature is the Ultimate Collection Agency.
Bought the book!
Thank you so much for this. I don't know where else one would learn about a 26 year old journalist like Matt Scace.

How about Lytton on fire? Crickets...
I hosted the Ottawa book launch for Kevin Loring's excellent book about Lytton.
Was out there last week. The valley to the south was scorched, with a few pockets untouched. I can't believe they were able to save Marmot Basin.
This is such a good series of books … well worth the subscription
Looking up Loring now, thanks.
