People sometimes ask how much a subscription costs. I find this funny, because it's obviously a lapse on my part, but I grew up digitally native so I always just hit the Subscribe button to find out what the cost is. OF COURSE some people disagree that this is a good strategy! Sorry about that.

So: Subscriptions cost $5 a month. Or $50 a year (a 16.7% savings over the monthly rate). Or any larger amount you feel like paying: "Founding Member" is pre-set at $250 a year, but you can reset that number to any amount larger than $50. As always, I say this because I mean it, I'm grateful for all subscribers, including those who don't pay.

I haven’t told my husband I subscribe because he might say we can’t afford that. You are my “guilty pleasure.” (You, and Dairy Milk Fruit and Nut bars.)

This is flattering, and also too true because on some days I'm basically composed of Dairy Milk Fruit and Nut bars.

Congratulations!

It must feel very rewarding to start a new Substack adventure and discover such a loyal following. To go from zero to needing a producer in such a short time is a beacon of hope for the sustainability of quality journalism in Canada.

So glad you are continuing this venture and it is wonderful that you can now hire a producer. It is also good to know you appreciate opinionated subscribers. We are that. An Emergency in Ottawa was great and I will be ordering Trudeau on the Ropes. Isn't it great to go to work each day and like your boss?

But, it also means that he really has no one to whom he can complain and expect a different result.

My understanding of the org chart around here is that all of you get to complain to me. Thanks for keeping the supply of complaints manageable so far!

Paul does a great job. I don't think he has to worry about complaining to a boss.

I understand the use of podcasts: however, I find I have time to either read or listen, not both. A couple of my favourite substack authors have weekly podcasts lasting an hour or so and i wish there was a text copy available to read/scan. i feel that I am missing out but there are only so many hours in the day and reading gives me much more enjoyment than listening.

Thank-you, Mr. Wells, for your work here and on your podcast, and congratulations. Two years in and at least three more to go - lucky us! You are a beacon of sanity and good sense. Getting from Alberta to Ottawa for a book launch is a little far; otherwise, I'd be there to wish you well. I will definitely pick up a copy when it reaches my local book seller.

There will! There's a Kindle version of An Emergency in Ottawa, so I assume on my publication day (May 7) or shortly before, you'll be able to find a Kindle order or pre-order button on Amazon.
