I read A Prayer for the City 20 years ago, and even now, I can vividly remember the immense satisfaction and absorption of that experience. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, and led me to seek out other deep, journalism-style books about US cities and towns. Other great books on a similar type: Detroit: An American Autopsy by Charlie LeDuff and Praying for Sheetrock by Melissa Faye Greene.
