Thanks for the reminder about this book. I hope to read it after I take a mental break from reading Careless People, the tell-all by Sarah Wynn-Williams, the former Facebook exec. These platforms' hunger for engagement is undoubtedly a problem. The character of the people running them might be a bigger one.

I read Careless Peope several.months go knowing full well the addictive power of FB. I found it a fascinating tale by an employee who truly believed the capacityof FB for good outweighed the bad and who felt compelled to speak when she could no longer justify working for a powerful, divisive force. PW piece mentions not knowing what we know now..that the left can be as equally captured by the algorithms as the political right.

Thanks for bringing this back to the fore, Paul. Three years on, it seems only the EU is serious about constraining the greed of these tech giants. With a prime practitioner of social media now in the White House, nothing can be expected from the US for the next few years. That should not stop people anywhere from documenting and exposing the nefarious effects of social media.
