We have arrived at the part of the game where we cancel counter-tariffs
Say what you will about Pete Hoekstra, and I’ll be delighted to join in, but the dude gets results. Eight days ago the U.S. ambassador to Ottawa told Global News that Mark Carney “has pulled the rug out from USMCA” and “has decided, ‘That’s fair game. We will call into question CUSMA.” The specific Canadian action that Hoekstra said endangered the successor treaty to NAFTA was “putting tariffs on CUSMA products.”
On Friday, eight days after Hoekstra gave that interview, Mark Carney announced Canada will lift those tariffs on CUSMA-compliant goods on Sept. 1.
One gets the impression it’s been a busy week in whatever they’re calling the Langevin Block these days.
