I’m struck by the parallels between Joe Biden’s decision to arrange the 2024 Presidential debates on his terms and what Stephen Harper did in 2015. Because I wish Biden well in the coming U.S. presidential election, I’m glad I didn’t complain about Harper in 2015.
Both leaders were working to maximize their advantage. They would have been reckless to do anything else. Today’s a good time to remind ourselves that decisions about whether to participate in leaders’ debates are inherently political decisions. You should expect to see more such decisions as a Canadian election nears.
